History of Standard Engineering Ltd.

Standard started in 1894 as a Leicester based family engineering business, manufacturing a wide range of shoe making equipment.  In the 1970’s it was purchased by Halma plc.  Over the next 25 years the business evolved into a leading manufacturer of shoe repair equipment.

In 1999 Tony Law, the Managing Director and Brian Sperryn, the Sales Director conducted a management buyout.  Now with a more focused management the company acquired the rights to Market and Sell the Volumatic range of High Security Disintegrators, these machines had for the past 20 years been manufactured by Standard for Volumatic, another Halma business.

A year later the new Standard Engineering Ltd. purchased its only UK shoe repair machine competitor Whitfield Wylie Ltd., whose products included Silca key blank and machinery agency for the shoe repair industry.  Whitfield’s range of finishing machines ideally complimented Standard’s products and their full manufacturing capability in their Kettering factory suited the small batch bespoke requirements of the market.

In 2006 the company restructured further with another Management Buyout.  The Company is now moving forward in a new, enlarged premises in Kettering under the guidance of Company Chairman Tony Law, Finance Director Iain Holliday and Sales Director Keith Malyon.

The Company has an experienced team of employees offering a range of products for shoe repairing, security shredding and shoe making equipment, all backed by a team of skilled engineers.

Over the last couple of years Standard have refined and developed their machine range to reflect modern requirements of noise and dust reduction with the new Model 720 Finisher with improved dust management, and the Air-Flo range of workstations which filter adhesive fumes.

In addition, we have invested in high quality Hurco CNC machinery.  This investment offers us opportunities in precision engineering, enabling us to explore other markets, such as motorsport, increasing our engineering prowess.
